• In the very heart of Assisi, just a few metres from St. Clare's square, you see an ancient 14th century stone arch to your left with a massive wooden Franciscan door of the 18th century.

Just above the arch there is a shrine dating back to 1330 portraying Our Lady and Jesus, St. Francis, St. Clare and other two Saints, St. Biagio and St. John the Baptist, by the same painter who decorated St. Damiano cloister (another very important religious monument in Franciscan history).

  • In the 14th century, ten Confraternities (Disciplinati o Flagellanti o Battuti) were active in Assisi: some of them were founded at the beginning of the century, others maybe at the end of the century.

This shows how the penitential movement, which started in Perugia in 1260 thanks to Brother Raniero Fasani, was particularly active in Assisi because of the presence of the Franciscan Friars in town. The oldest available document concerning the Confraternity of St. Maria del Vescovado is dated 1354 and can be found in the land register of the goods belonging to the churches of the entire territory of Assisi.
